Donor-Centred Fundraising

Donor-Centred Fundraising
Course: MGT5132

This course examines the fundraising process as it relates to donors. It is essential for fundraising professionals to understand what makes donors "tick"- what motivates them to give. Students will explore the identification and 'qualification' of donors, cultivation of their interest and the process of solicitation, recognition and renewal of their support.

Mar 22 to April 19, 2005 Algonquin College

The overall aim of this course is to present a systematic examination of the fundraising process as it relates to donors. It is essential for fundraising professionals to understand what makes donors “tick”.

Donors are the lifeblood of nonprofit agencies; without them the voluntary sector would cease to exist. For this reason alone, fundraising and donor stewardship are inextricably linked. For example, fundraising is grounded in the understanding of donor motivation – why individuals, corporations, foundations and governments can be persuaded to open their coffers to support causes and organizations in the voluntary sector.

This course sets up frameworks for analyzing the twin processes of fundraising and donor stewardship, the most useful of which is the “pyramid of giving”. This introduces the different levels of fundraising programs and the fundamental stages in donor development. The course also provides an outline of the typical stages of growth in fundraising development within organizations, and the pros and cons of various fundraising techniques.

With the frameworks in place, the course then explores fundraising in the context of the 6 essential steps in donor development:

  • Donor Identification
  • Donor Qualification
  • Donor Cultivation
  • Donor Solicitation
  • Donor Recognition
  • Donor Renewal

The course is advised by taught by Boyd McBride, National Director of SOS Children's Villages Canada, an worldwide child charity You too can help SOS Children's Villages Canada with there work in 132 countries by sponsoring a child or sponsoring a village
